Joburg Artcrawl: Recontextualise This!
Mary Corrigall has curated an intimate walking and talking tour of galleries along Joburg’s Rosebank art strip. This exclusive, one-off themed crawl is centred on how artists are recontextualising existing images, photographs, and narratives as a means of engaging with and reconciling with history, race and gender.
There is a long history attached to this practice that Corrigall will outline, before delving into how and why it is a defining thread in SA contemporary art now.
The crawl begins at the Goethe-Institut Gallery in Parkview where crawlers will view BikoHausen, a multimedia installation created by Philip Miller. This layered visual and aural collaborative work is an artistic response to a series of selected fragmented archival sound recordings documenting an encounter between the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and black consciousness activist Steve Biko in 1971. Corrigall will discuss the work with Miller, before heading to the Lizamore & Associates Gallery, where they will meet Lebohang Kganye. This rising photographic artist will expand on her submission for the SA Taxi Art Award, involving “an excavation” of a family photo album. At the Circa Gallery, Corrigall will be in conversation with Rebecca Haysom, looking at the works at her solo exhibition, the Tiger’s Bride. Corrigall will explore how her collaging plugs into the ‘recontextualise’ theme and challenges the narratives fixing gender stereotypes.
The crawl will conclude with refreshments and lunch (optional and at your own expense) at the Milk Bar, at Trumpet on Keyes.
