Recontextualise This!

April 25, 2017

The crawl began at the Goethe-Institut Gallery in Parkview where crawlers first watched  BikoHausen, a multimedia installation created by Philip Miller. This layered visual and aural collaborative work is an artistic response to a series of selected fragmented archival sound recordings documenting an encounter between the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and black consciousness activist Steve Biko in 1971. Miller met with us afterwards and explained how he never connected with Stockhausen when he was first commissioned by the Goethe-Institut to create a work around this composer. His meeting with Biko provided the spark and he embarked on a research project, looking at his visit to SA in the early 70s.

We headed on foot to the Lizamore & Associates Gallery, where we met Lebohang Kganye. This rising photographic artist expanded on her submission for the SA Taxi Art Award, involving “an excavation” of a family photo album. This was compelled by her mother's death. She has evolved her language into stop-frame animation.

At the Circa Gallery Rebecca Haysom met with us and discussed her quirky collages that riff on fairy tales and fashion and how the female identity is linked to romantic relationships and finding, hooking 'the one'.

The crawl ended with refreshments, lunch at the Milk Bar, at Trumpet on Keyes, where we discussed art, life and everything else! What a nice day!
